Stepping in the bucket is a direction problem. Measure the stride.

Searched as "stepping in the bucket baseball". Here is what the phrase actually means, what the video shows, and how a measured report ends the argument.

What it looks like

What is actually happening

The stride sets the direction for everything that follows. When the front foot bails, the hips open early, the head moves off the ball, and the plate coverage shrinks by half. Our reports measure stride length and direction, head drift, and how much rotation leaks early, so you can see exactly how far the bucket step travels and whether it is fear, timing, or habit.

What we measure to find it

Stride lengthHead driftHip rotation timing

Every measurement comes from computer vision body tracking on one phone video, 33 landmarks on every frame, the same class of kinematic analysis professional organizations run on their players. Estimates are labeled EST, and no ball speed numbers are invented.

Drills that help

Stride to the line

Chalk a straight line from the back foot toward the pitcher. Stride reps must land on or inside the line, ball optional at first, then soft toss.

Outside gate

Feed only away-side tosses through a target gate set to the opposite field. The task pulls the stride and the barrel back toward the plate.

Drills are constraints, not lectures: set the task and let the player's body solve it. They work best aimed at the measured leak, which is the point of measuring first.

Stop guessing. Measure it.
