Flying open is the sequence firing backwards.
Searched as "flying open pitching". Here is what the phrase actually means, what the video shows, and how a measured report ends the argument.
What it looks like
- Front shoulder yanks toward first base early
- Misses high and to the arm side
- Breaking ball backs up, fastball runs wild
What is actually happening
A pitcher flies open when the shoulders rotate before the hips finish their turn, spilling energy sideways and dragging the arm behind. Sequence timing measures the order directly, and stride direction plus weight shift show whether the lower half is causing it. The high arm-side miss is the signature, and it is one of the most fixable command leaks once you can see it.
What we measure to find it
Every measurement comes from computer vision body tracking on one phone video, 33 landmarks on every frame, the same class of kinematic analysis professional organizations run on their players. Estimates are labeled EST, and no ball speed numbers are invented.
Drills that help
Stride landings on or slightly closed to the line, ten for ten, before throwing at effort.
The glove stays firm over the front knee through release. Energy that used to leak sideways goes to the plate.
Drills are constraints, not lectures: set the task and let the player's body solve it. They work best aimed at the measured leak, which is the point of measuring first.
Stop guessing. Measure it.
